BUILDING LEARNING COMMUNITIES: A Developmental
Process
The Annenberg Institute has published Stages of Team Development:
Lessons from the Struggles of Site-Based Management, by Nancy Mohr
and Alan Dichter, both former high school principals in New York
City. Recognizing that the reality of shared decision making does
not always live up to the promise, the authors share what they have
learned in over 30 years in school reform about the purpose of shared
decision making (it's for the students, not the adults), how to
build a learning organization (it's a developmental process, with
identifiable stages) and what is required at each stage along the
way. Our enhanced Web version of the paper features audio clips
of Nancy and Alan offering additional insights into each of the
stages of team development.
